Morrisania and Melrose were among the hardest-hit neighborhoods during the South Bronx arson and abandonment crises of the 1970s. Both have recovered substantially, anchored by the Third Avenue El corridor and new residential development. The neighborhood retains a working-class character with strong Puerto Rican and Dominican communities.
